About the role
About Luzern Risk
Luzern Risk makes captive ownership accessible to more businesses and helps them turn risk into a strategic asset. We are a venture-backed, Series B captive management firm. Technology is central to how we scale our expertise and service.
Our values guide how we work. Fight for the truth, put clients first, pull our weight, systemize and never settle.
The opportunity
We are building an actuarial function that combines strong client partnership, rigorous risk analytics and technology. We are looking for an experienced property and casualty actuary to take ownership of client work and help develop the capabilities that support our growth.
The initial emphasis is on expanding delivery capacity. That means leading assigned engagements, supporting client workflows and maintaining a high standard of actuarial analysis and communication. Alongside this work, you will contribute to bringing feasibility and reserving processes in-house and developing reusable analytical tools.
Working directly with the Head of Actuarial, who leads actuarial methodology and the function's contribution to platform development, you will help translate recurring client needs into practical improvements. These may include Excel templates, Python or R implementations, enhancements to our risk simulation tool, and collaboration with Product and Engineering.
Our work spans three connected pillars.
- Client partnership and actuarial leadership: Support captive owners and risk managers through feasibility, pricing, reserving and risk retention analysis that informs program design and financing decisions.
- Scalable analytics and risk intelligence: Connect loss experience, benchmarking and simulation to evaluate risk across lines of business, geographies and program structures.
- Technology and decision support: Embed actuarial reasoning into software that makes analysis more accessible, interactive and scalable, supported by sound methods, validation and professional judgment.
The balance between client delivery, analytical development and platform work will evolve with business priorities and your strengths. There is room to develop deeper ownership in particular areas while contributing across the function. We welcome candidates whose strongest experience is in pricing and modeling or in reserving. Captive experience is welcome but not required.
What you will do
Own client work and recommendations
- Lead assigned engagements, including feasibility studies, pricing and funding analyses, reserve reviews, renewal assessments and diligence on existing captive programs.
- Manage scope, data requirements, timelines and documentation, keeping stakeholders informed and raising material issues early.
- Translate analysis into practical recommendations on retention, program structure, funding, collateral and capital.
- Explain assumptions, uncertainty and trade-offs clearly. Lead actuarial discussions with clients, brokers, fronting carriers, reinsurers and regulators as appropriate.
Maintain rigorous analysis and review
- Apply sound actuarial judgment to loss development, trend, credibility, benchmarking and the interpretation of incomplete or changing data.
- Review work produced by external actuarial partners, identify issues that could change a decision and document the basis for conclusions and reliance.
- Contribute to consistent review standards, transparent documentation and quality checks across internal and external work.
Develop reusable methods and platform capabilities
- Use live engagements to identify opportunities to improve and standardize feasibility, reserving and risk analysis workflows.
- Develop and refine Excel templates or Python and R tools for assigned analytical needs, with clear assumptions, documentation and validation checks.
- Contribute to the development of our risk simulation tool and the evaluation of retention, funding, collateral and capital.
- Work with the Head of Actuarial, Product and Engineering to test platform capabilities and translate actuarial methods into reliable, reusable functionality.
Help grow the function and the business
- Improve workflows, mentor colleagues and contribute to hiring as the team grows.
- Support commercial discussions by assessing opportunities, explaining risk economics and defining the analysis needed to move forward.
What successful candidates bring
- Technical judgment: You make defensible selections with imperfect data, identify what matters most and communicate what an analysis can and cannot support.
- Commercial understanding and clear communication: You connect actuarial work to how insurance is developed, placed and financed. You explain recommendations in plain language and tailor the detail to the decision and audience.
- Ownership and collaboration: You move work forward independently, follow through on commitments and keep others informed. You recognize when to seek input or escalate an issue.
- Constructive challenge and learning: You welcome feedback, question assumptions respectfully and raise difficult issues early, with a practical recommendation.
- Building with technology: You enjoy improving methods and tools that others can use. You are curious about AI and comfortable collaborating with engineers while maintaining rigor and professional judgment.
Qualifications
- FCAS highly preferred. ACAS candidates considered with Exam 7 completed. Working knowledge of enterprise risk analysis and capital modeling expected.
- Strong commercial insurance acumen and substantial actuarial experience, with end-to-end ownership of pricing or reserving work in commercial or specialty lines, ideally across multiple lines.
- Experience presenting actuarial findings and recommendations to clients, underwriters, management or regulators.
- Strong Excel modeling skills and working proficiency in Python or R, with the ability to translate actuarial methods into transparent, reusable calculations.
Additional relevant experience
- Captives, self-insurance, alternative risk transfer or reinsurance.
- Loss simulation, capital modeling, collateral analysis or risk financing frameworks.
- Reserve reviews supporting statements of actuarial opinion.
- Developing analytical templates, models or repeatable workflows.
- Specifying, validating or governing models, particularly in collaboration with engineers or data scientists.
- SQL and experience preparing or managing data for actuarial analysis.
Growth and professional development
As the function develops, there is room to deepen technical specialization, lead broader client engagements, own analytical capabilities or mentor colleagues, based on your strengths and business needs.
The role offers direct exposure to captive formation and management, regulators, fronting and reinsurance markets, and the development of actuarial capabilities within a software platform.
Support for remaining CAS exams, continuing education and captive-specific credentials, including the Associate in Captive Insurance through ICCIE, can be discussed based on your development goals.
